Ear Piercing Aftercare
I’ve Just Had My Ears Pierced — What Happens Next?
Your guide to ear piercing aftercare, healing and everyday comfort.
Just had your ears pierced? Whether you’ve chosen a simple lobe piercing, helix, tragus or another cartilage piercing, knowing how to care for the area is an important part of the recovery process.
At POLISHED RECOVERY™, we believe good aftercare starts with understanding what’s normal, what to avoid and how to make everyday activities a little more comfortable.
From cleaning your piercing to sleeping comfortably, here’s what you need to know.
What to Expect After a New Ear Piercing
A new piercing is a small wound, and your body needs time to heal around the jewellery.
During the early stages, you may experience:
- Mild tenderness or sensitivity.
- Some redness or slight swelling.
- Occasional itching as the area settles.
- Small amounts of pale fluid that dry into a light crust around the jewellery.
These can be normal during healing, particularly in the first few days.
However, symptoms should generally improve rather than become progressively worse.
How to Clean a New Ear Piercing
Keep it simple. Clean gently. Don’t overdo it.
Your professional piercer should provide aftercare instructions specific to your piercing.
A commonly recommended routine is to clean the area morning and night using a sterile saline wound wash suitable for piercings.
Step 1 — Wash Your Hands
Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching or cleaning your piercing.
Step 2 — Apply Sterile Saline
Gently spray the piercing with sterile saline wound wash, following the product instructions.
Look for a sterile 0.9% sodium chloride solution without unnecessary additives.
Avoid homemade saltwater solutions, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or harsh antiseptic products unless specifically advised by an appropriate healthcare professional.
Step 3 — Clean the Front and Back
Make sure the saline reaches both the front and back of your piercing.
If there is any softened residue, gently remove it with clean, disposable gauze where necessary.
Avoid picking at crusts, rubbing the area or forcing away anything that isn’t ready to come off naturally.
You don’t need to move or twist your jewellery to clean around it.
Step 4 — Dry the Area Gently
After cleaning, gently pat away excess moisture using clean, disposable gauze.
Alternatively, if preferred, you can use a clean hairdryer on its cool-air setting, held at a comfortable distance, with gentle airflow to help dry around the piercing.
Avoid hot air, high airflow and holding the dryer too close to your skin. Do not direct dust or debris towards the piercing.
Avoid rubbing the area with towels, as fibres can catch on your jewellery and cause irritation.
Step 5 — Leave Your Jewellery Alone
Once cleaned, avoid unnecessary touching or movement.
Your piercing doesn’t need constant attention. Gentle, consistent aftercare is generally better than excessive cleaning.
Should You Twist Your Ear Piercing?
No. Avoid twisting or rotating your jewellery while the piercing heals.
You may have heard older advice recommending that earrings should be turned regularly.
However, modern professional piercing aftercare generally advises against this.
Twisting can irritate healing tissue and disturb the area unnecessarily.
There’s no need to rotate your jewellery when applying saline or cleaning around the piercing.
How Should You Sleep With a New Ear Piercing?
Sleeping can be one of the most uncomfortable parts of having a new ear piercing, especially if you’re naturally a side sleeper.
Direct pressure from your pillow may cause tenderness, friction and irritation around the jewellery.
Where possible:
- Sleep on your back to avoid pressure on either ear.
- If only one ear is pierced, consider sleeping on your unpierced side.
- Keep pillowcases clean and change them regularly.
- Keep hair away from your jewellery to prevent snagging.
- Avoid resting your newly pierced ear directly against your pillow.
What if You’re a Side Sleeper?
Changing your usual sleeping position isn’t always easy.
A specially designed ear piercing pillow may provide an alternative.
Unlike a regular pillow, a piercing pillow has an opening that allows you to position your ear away from the main sleeping surface.
This may help reduce direct pressure on your piercing when used correctly.

What Should You Avoid After Getting Your Ears Pierced?
While your piercing heals, try to avoid:
- Touching the area with unwashed hands.
- Twisting, rotating or unnecessarily moving your jewellery.
- Sleeping directly on the newly pierced ear.
- Using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide or harsh cleaning products.
- Applying makeup, skincare or hair products directly onto the piercing.
- Catching your jewellery with clothing, hairbrushes or headphones.
- Submerging your piercing in swimming pools, hot tubs or other bodies of water during healing.
Avoid changing or removing your initial jewellery before your piercer advises it’s appropriate.
How Long Does an Ear Piercing Take to Heal?
Healing times vary depending on the piercing location and your individual circumstances.
Earlobe Piercings
Initial healing commonly takes approximately 6–8 weeks, although complete healing may take longer.
Cartilage Piercings
Helix, tragus and other cartilage piercings can take 6–12 months or longer to heal fully.
Even when a piercing looks healed on the outside, the tissue underneath may still be recovering.
Continue following your piercer’s advice and avoid changing jewellery prematurely.
When Should You Seek Advice?
Some initial tenderness and swelling can be expected, but increasing or persistent symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.
Seek medical advice if you notice:
- Pain or swelling that becomes progressively worse.
- Spreading redness or increasing warmth around the piercing.
- Thick yellow or green discharge, particularly with an unpleasant smell.
- Fever or feeling generally unwell.
- Jewellery becoming embedded in the surrounding skin.
Infections involving ear cartilage can require prompt medical attention.
If you suspect an infection, don’t remove your jewellery unless a healthcare professional advises you to.
