Brow Healing
Worried About How Your Brows Are Healing?
If your brows suddenly look too dark, start flaking, become patchy or seem to disappear altogether, don’t panic. Permanent makeup brows can change considerably during the healing process before the final colour settles.
Whether you’ve had microblading, combination, ombré, powder or hyperrealism brows, this guide explains the common stages of brow healing and what you may notice along the way.

Days 1–4: Why Are My Brows So Dark?
It’s completely normal for freshly treated brows to look darker, bolder and more defined than you expected. Immediately after treatment, the pigment is fresh and the skin may also have some redness or slight swelling.
As the skin begins to heal, the brows can temporarily appear even darker before flaking starts. This is not your final healed colour.
Once the surface skin begins to shed and heal, the intensity will start to soften. Your final colour needs several weeks to fully settle.
Days 5–7: Why Are My Brows Flaking and Patchy?
As the skin heals, your brows will usually begin to flake. You may notice small pieces of dry skin coming away and the brows can start to look uneven or patchy.
Do not pick, peel or scratch the flakes, even if they look ready to come away. Removing them prematurely can disturb the healing skin and may affect pigment retention.
Let the flakes shed naturally and continue following your aftercare instructions. What you’re seeing at this stage is part of the healing process — not your finished brows.
Days 8–14: Where Have My Brows Gone?
Once the flakes have come away, you might suddenly feel as though your brows have disappeared or become much lighter. This stage can be surprising, but don’t panic.
Fresh new skin is covering the implanted pigment and can temporarily make the colour underneath appear very faint. This is sometimes referred to as the ghosting stage.
Over the following weeks, as the skin continues to heal, the pigment will gradually become more visible again.
Resist the temptation to judge your brows at this stage — they are still healing.
Weeks 2–4: Is My Brow Colour Coming Back?
During the next couple of weeks, you should begin to notice the brow colour becoming more visible again as the skin continues to heal.
The colour may still look a little uneven in places, and some areas may appear lighter than others. This doesn’t necessarily mean the pigment hasn’t retained — your brows are still settling.
Try not to compare your brows from one day to the next. Give the skin time to complete its healing process before judging the final result
Weeks 4–6: Your Healed Brow Result
By around 4–6 weeks, your brows should be much closer to their healed result. The colour will have softened from those first few days and the skin should have completed most of its healing.
Some areas may have retained more pigment than others, which is why your PMU artist may assess the brows once they are fully healed and decide whether any areas need refining.
Everyone heals differently, so avoid judging your final result too early. Fresh brows and healed brows can look very different.
